October 17, 2005 Chicago -- Journalists are invited to attend the Inaugural Symposium of the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago from Thursday, Dec. 8, to Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the Hyatt Regency hotel, 51 E. Wacker Dr., in Chicago. The symposium, "New Views of the Universe," will bring together scientists from around the world to discuss the current state and future of theory, experiments and observations at the boundary between cosmology and particle physics. The symposium also will honor the late David Schramm, who pioneered the study of the early universe by connecting the fields of cosmology and particle physics.

The first day of the symposium will focus on Schramm's scientific legacy. Topics to be covered in the following days include the early universe and the cosmic microwave background, dark energy, galaxy formation and large-scale structure, and dark matter and high-energy astrophysics.

The University of Chicago's Center for Cosmological Physics was renamed the Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics in 2004 following a $7.5 million donate from California philanthropist Fred Kavli and the Kavli Foundation. Kavli and the foundation support 10 research institutes worldwide in brain science, nanoscience and cosmology.

The symposium registration fee will be waived for credentialed journalists or free-lancers with letters of assignment, although there will be a charge to attend either of the two symposium dinners. For media registration, e-mail Steve Koppes at skoppes@uchicago.edu.
