Network trainer


Network trainers are expected to be associated with established afterschool networks such as a statewide afterschool networks, Girl Scouts, 4-H, etc. The goal of training network trainers is to disseminate the program sustainably in the network and to have it become a core curriculum for the network. The network assumes a commitment to send trainers to the training workshop and then participate in the subsequent implementation and evaluation of the program.

What we offer you:

  • Free travel to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for two people from your out-of-school-time network to attend training workshop in December 2010.
  • Free three-day training workshop offered onsite at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
  • Two copies of curriculum and one complete activity kit provided to each team of trainers at no cost.
  • Access to extensive digital resources to help with training and implementation, including digital copy of manual, printable worksheets and handouts, and evaluation forms.
  • Technical support from the core AU team in 2011 as you implement your own training workshops.
  • A NASA certificate as a certified “Afterschool Universe” trainer.


What we expect from you:

  • A two-person team within your organization will attend a three-day training workshop in December 2010 and become certified Afterschool Universe trainers.
  • A commitment that your team of trainers will conduct at least two training workshops on the program in 2011 for program leaders in your network.
  • A commitment to provide support for site leaders to undergo training.
  • A commitment that a minimum of ten sites in your network will implement the program in 2011-2012.
  • A commitment that your trainers and program implementers will participate fully in evaluation efforts. This includes trainers completing evaluation data for the train-the-trainer workshop, obtaining evaluation data on their own training workshops, and working with the implementers to provide evaluation data on the program implementation.


Eligibility requirements

  • Network must have more than 10 sites that serve middle school students.
  • Applicants must be a recognized trainer for the afterschool network that is submitting the application.
  • Trainers must have worked in afterschool field for more than three years.
  • Trainers must have been trainers for at least two years.
  • Science background is advantageous (but not required)


How to apply

Applications must be completed and emailed to au-application@majordomo.gsfc.nasa.gov by June 30, 2010. As part of the application, a manager from the network must provide a letter of support stating that the agency understands the terms and conditions for participating in this project and is committed to supporting the trainers. Details are provided in the application form.
